Our Atmosphere

Our atmosphere is made up primarily nitrogen and oxygen, which account for about 99%.  All the other gases are present in small quantities.

Carbon dioxide is present at only 0.04%, or 400 parts per million.

These gases do not all absorb energy from the sun in the same way.  The natural gases which exhibit the 'greenhouse' effect are:

  • water
  • methane
  • carbon dioxide
